What is Trauma Therapy?

Trauma therapy is a unique specialty of the practice of psychotherapy and can consist of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing or EMDR therapy, somatic trauma therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), or other modalities. The goal of trauma psychotherapy is to help individuals process and heal from various traumatic and distressing events. Receiving counseling for trauma is a very individual experience; what works for one person may not work for another. Everyone's trauma blueprint is very different. Some common components of healing trauma include:

  • Understanding the roots and origins of your trauma symptoms (core wounds)

  • Active processing/releasing of PTSD symptoms, emotions, and somatic symptoms

  • Learning and applying tools and resources to navigate triggers and activations outside of sessions

EMDR Therapy

EMDR is a therapy focused on processing a traumatic or distressing event using bilateral stimulation (BLS), replacing the memory with a more helpful and adaptive belief and response to the event.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness tools and skills to practice increased self-awareness, acceptance, and appropriate change. Mindfulness can help with regulating emotions, shifting thoughts, and developing healthy coping mechanisms.

Somatic Trauma Therapy

Utilizing the body in healing trauma and processing emotions and somatic symptoms. This is a body-based therapy that uses sensory awareness for emotion regulation and integration.

Trauma-Informed Care

Psychotherapy utilizing a trauma-based lens that is gentle, compassionate, and culturally sensitive. TIC helps to increase safety, trust, support, empowerment, and collaboration.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

DBT therapy involves teaching skills to manage difficult emotions, tolerate distress, and improve relationships. It helps change maladaptive and unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors.

Online & In-Person

All of these modalities have been adapted to be utilized both in-person and online. Whether via Telehealth or in-office, each technique can offer relief of symptoms and aid in healing trauma.
